Smart Gilas Pilipinas gained entry into the semifinals of the 2011 Jones Cup. Smart Gilas beat Japan, 94-78, to clinch the fourth semifinal slot in the tournament. The Philippine national team to the Jones Cup thus finishes the elimination round with a 5-2 win-loss card, with its two losses coming from Jordan and South Korea.
Smart Gilas Pilipinas needed to win this match against Japan to gain an outright semifinals berth and avoid a complicated tie and tie-breaking siyuation with other teams in the competition.
Leading the standings is still South Korea with a 5-1 record followed by the Philippines and Iran with identical 5-2 slates. The last semifinal slot is still up for grabs between Jordan and Chinese Taipei. The hosts are currently in action against South Korea.
