Gilas runs over UAE to keep semis bid alive
CHINESE TAIPEI – Smart Gilas Pilipinas needed a strong, bullying effort from naturalized Marcus Douthit in the first half before finishing off a youthful, inexperienced United Arab Emirates side with a series of dizzying runs in the last two quarters to hack out a 95-60 rout to inch closer to the semifinals in the William Jones Cup at the Hsinjhuang Stadium in New Taipei City here.
The 6-10 Douthit towered above everyone else and bulldozed his way to 23 points by making eight of his 11 shots while adding seven from the foul line and spiked his strong offensive game with a game-high 13 rebounds that sent the Nationals to their fourth win against two losses.
Fil-Ams Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter and Asi Taulava, who was one of the two players loaned by the PBA in this nine-day joust that serves as tune up for the FIBA-Asia Championship slated Sept. 15-25 in Wuhan, China where a 2012 London Olympic berth is at stake, chipped in 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively.
The win though isn't enough to send the Filipinos into the semis as they would need to beat Japan, which earlier slammed Malaysia to remain in contention with a 3-3 (win-loss) slate, at 5 p.m. tomorrow to avoid complications of a tie or ties in case of a defeat and advance automatically.
