GARCIA CRIES FOUL, DEMANDS REMATCH

The camp of Ramon Garcia Hirales is demanding a rematch after the Mexican claimed he was robbed of a victory against Donnie "Ahas" Nietes in Pinoy Pride 9 Saturday in Bacolod City.

Nietes defeated Garcia via unanimous decision to win his second world title, with judges scoring the bout 115-113, 118-110 and 117-111. Garcia felt he became the victim of "home-cooking."

"It's not fair, it's really not fair. The people know and the press know, he doesn't fight," said Alex Montenegro, Garcia's manager.

Garcia's trainer, Leo Camacho, complained about the scores of the American judges, who had scored the bout 118-110 and 117-111.

The Filipino judge, Atty. Danrex Tapdasan, scored the bout 115-113. After the event, boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielz said Tapdasan's scorecard best reflected the closeness of the boxing match.

Nietes defended his victory, however, saying he knew he was ahead on the judges' scorecards.

'KA ROGER' IS DEAD, REDS ADMIT FINALLY

More than 3 months since he succumbed to a heart attack, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) finally admitted that its spokesman, Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal, is dead. In a statement, CPP said Rosal died last June 22 because of a heart attack. He was 64.

“The public announcement was delayed to allow the concerned organs of the CPP to inform Ka Roger's daughters of their father's demise. Intense military operations prevented information from reaching his daughters with dispatch. Ka Roger's siblings have also been informed of his passing.”

“The entire membership of the CPP, Red fighters of the New People's Army (NPA), revolutionary forces and the Filipino masses mourn Ka Roger's death,” the statement read.

All units of the CPP’s armed group, the New People’s Army, will fall in formation to pay tribute to Ka Roger on October 15 at exactly 12 noon.

“They will carry out a gun salute in his memory. All units of the CPP and revolutionary mass organizations are enjoined to launch tribute meetings to remember Ka Roger and his contributions to the historic revolutionary struggles of the Filipino people,” CPP said.

The news of Rosal’s death has been circulating since last year because of his absence in peace talks.

Rosal headed the NPA's Melito Glor Command in the Southern Tagalog region and was later designated as spokesman of the CPP.

Former Beatle McCartney set to wed U.S. heiress: reports

LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney will wed for the third time on Sunday when he and New York heiress Nancy Shevell are married in a civil ceremony in London, British newspapers reported.

The Daily Mirror and the Sun tabloids said on Saturday that McCartney and Shevell, who posted wedding banns last month, would be married at London’s Marylebone Register Office before 30 invited guests.

It is the same venue where McCartney married his late first wife Linda in 1969, at the height of the Beatles’ fame. Linda died of breast cancer in 1998.

"They have been given special dispensation by the council to marry on Sunday and have chosen what would have been the groom’s former bandmate John Lennon’s 71st birthday for their big day," the Daily Mirror said.

McCartney’s partnership with Lennon in 1960s Britain produced some of the most famous and enduring pop songs of the past 50 years.

A spokesman for McCartney told Reuters in an email: "We are not commenting. It’s all speculation."

The Daily Mirror quoted a source close to McCartney as saying: "The wedding is in keeping with the way Paul and Nancy have conducted their entire relationship — low-key, understated and fuelled by goodwill.

"Neither of them want a huge fuss made and the main priority for both was family."

The wedding will be followed by a reception held in McCartney’s back garden, the paper said.

Shevell, 51, who is divorced, and McCartney, 69, are believed to have begun dating after his bitter split with second wife, former model Heather Mills.

McCartney and Mills were wed in 2002 in a lavish ceremony at Castle Leslie in Ireland estimated by celebrity magazines to have cost around $3.2 million.

But four years later they confirmed they had separated, blaming media intrusion into their private lives, and in 2008 the couple divorced.

McCartney has a son, two daughters and a stepdaughter from his marriage to Linda and a daughter from his union with Mills.

Fortune 500 Firm Fluor Corporation Opens Cebu Office, to Hire More Engineers

Fortune 500 company, Fluor Corp., a US-based construction and management firm, which opened an office in Cebu recently, is targeting to hire some 150 engineering graduates by the end of this year, as it hopes to grow its pool of employees to 300 by 2012.

“We will be aggressive in our presence in Cebu, as we have successfully done in Manila,” said Peter Oosterveer, group president of Fluor’s Energy and Chemicals Group. “:n the next few months, we will be hiring more engineers.”

The company launched its engineering and design facility in Cebu at the TGU Tower, at the Asiatown IT Park. Said facility is the second office opened by the firm in the Philippines – their Alabang quarters currently employs a sizeable workforce–and its fourth in Southeast Asia.

Oosterveer said that because Fluor is a knowledge-based outsourcing firm, it will need the expertise of local engineering graduates from industrial, chemical, and mechanical to do “highly complicated technical work” from engineering design, procurement, and construction management services, among others.

He expressed optimism that the company would be able to find a ready pool of engineers in Cebu, saing that Fluor’s reason for choosing the Philippines as one of its growth areas in Asia is due largely to the country’s good relationship with US-based companies, as well as the Filipino work ethic, flexibility and quality of skill.

“The company’s strong presence for about 25 years in the Philippines is enough testament of our confidence in the country,” Oosterveer said.

Ten Filipino Seafarers Home After Pirate Abduction

Ten Filipino seafarers abducted by pirates in the Gulf of Oman were reunited with their families in the Philippines Saturday after spending more than six months in captivity.

The Filipinos were welcomed by their families at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Saturday, Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said. They were part of the 19 Philippine nationals who comprised the crew of the Panamanian-flagged, Greek-owned MV Dover.
Aside from the Filipinos also released were three Romanians and a Russian who served in the ship.
The remaining Filipino crew of the MV Dover are expected to arrive in the Philippines in the coming days.

Radio reports said that the MV Dover, a bulk carrier, was boarded by pirates last February 28 as it was travelling in the Gulf of Oman, 260 nautical miles North East of Salalah in the North Arabian Sea.

The pirates had commandeered the vessel and took it to Somalia where the captors demanded ransom for the release of the ship and its crewmen.

10 Victims of Illegal Recruitment Per Day, Says Migrante ME

At Migrante-Middle East’s (M-ME) complaint desk, an average of 10 cases of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) victimized by illegal recruiters come in on a daily basis.

This was among the cold figures provided by M-ME as the Saudi-based group of Filipino migrants frowned at the Philippine government’s “poor performance” in combating illegal recruitment activities the past few years.

M-ME Regional Coordinator John Leonard Monterona, citing data from his monitoring group in the Middle East, said they’re receiving an average of 10 victims of illegal recruitment who are asking for assistance.

In 2010, Monterona noted, the government handled 1,648 cases of illegal recruitment but it only acted upon and resolved 283, a disposition rate of 17.2 percent. He said the figures were from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).
