Sinalakay ng Hungarian police ang set ng pelikula ng Hollywood actor na si Brad Pitt kahit na hindi pa nasisimulan ang shooting nito.
Ayon sa mga otoridad, ni-raid nila ang isang warehouse sa kabisera ng Hungary na Budapest at doon ay nasamsam ang 85 high-powered firearms kagaya ng AK-47 at sniper rifles na ayon sa pulisya ay mayroong live ammunition.

Making Filipino Graduates More Employable
When the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011, it painted a picture of the global economy at a time characterized by significant uncertainty.
According to the WEF, “Economies are advancing at different speeds and there is still a risk of a ‘double dip’ in a number of countries.”
It then went on to highlight 12 pillars that determine a country’s level of competitiveness, one of which is Higher Education and Training. “Quality higher education and training,” the report states, “is crucial for economies that want to move up the value chain beyond simple production processes and products.
Today’s globalizing economy requires countries to nurture pools of well-educated workers who are able to adapt rapidly to their changing environment and the evolving needs of the production system.”
The report further revealed that the Philippines ranked a poor seventh among nine Southeast Asian nations in the area of education, science and technology, and innovation. Such a shame because in a recent media roundtable discussion with Jobstreet.com, Marketing Director Yoda Buyco revealed that there is actually a surplus of jobs available in the country.

No Extra Funds
Malacañang is not inclined to seek a supplemental budget from Congress to bankroll the increasing cost of rehabilitation of typhoon-hit provinces which now stands at P13.8 billion.
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Sunday the government has sufficient funds as of now to address the multi-billion-peso damage to agriculture and infrastructure left by the typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel.”
“As stated by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, there is enough fiscal space in our budget to handle the calamity,” Lacierda said over staterun Radyo ng Bayan, when asked if the Palace will consider seeking additional budget from Congress. Asked if the Palace will seek international aid for people adversely affected by the recent floods, Lacierda said: “Let us wait and see. We will discuss the issue of state calamity this week and we will let you know.” Defense Secretary Voltaire
Gazmin had earlier recommended to President Aquino the declaration of calamity in areas affected by the massive devastation wrought by the back-to-back typhoons, correcting earlier reports that the Defense Chief had called for a national state of calamity.

Saudi Filipino on Death Row for Blasphemy Granted Clemency
Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Filipino immigrants may soon be allowed to participate in electoral exercises in the country via the Internet.
The proposal was raised during a hearing of the joint House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Suffrage and Electoral Reforms on the proposed amendments to the Overseas Absentee Voting law or Republic Act 9189.
Appearing before the House bodies, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Armando Velasco said Internet voting will be a convenient system for OFWs and other migrants Filipinos.
Velasco said like the majority of the congressmen, he also favors Internet voting as a remedial solution but “it should be studied further particularly the security aspect.”
According to Velasco, there is a need to amend RA 9189 that provides only for the use of personal voting in Philippine embassies and consulates or the postal voting.
“If Congress passes the Internet voting amendment, overseas Filipino voters can vote while they are at home or in the office,” Velasco said.
Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro), who supported the proposal for Internet voting, said the proposed amendment to the law may increase the number of OFWs who will participate in the national elections in the future.

Government to Save P11 Billion a Year with Reforms in AFP Retirement System
The government will save P11 billion annually once reforms are implemented in the military’s retirement system, an official of the Armed Forces Retirement and Separation Benefits System (RSBS) disclosed yesterday.
RSBS president Emilio Marayag said the proposed reforms would address concerns that the government might be spending too much on retirees’ benefits.
“Our initial estimate is that once these (reforms) are approved, (the government would save) P11 billion per year,” Marayag said in a chance interview during the 35th anniversary of RSBS last Thursday in Quezon City.
He said the figure is based on the assumption that retired officers’ pension would increase by 11 percent while that of enlisted personnel would grow by 16 percent.
Marayag said the government would spend an additional P900 billion for pension benefits in 29 years if the current system were retained.
“Instead of spending P100 million (for benefits), the government would have to spend P1 trillion in 29 years,” he said.

Heavy Rains Until 2012 – Pagasa
The state weather bureau advised the public yesterday to brace for recurring heavy rains brought by La Niña that could last until the first quarter of 2012.
“We will have to plan now for the impacts of La Niña, which in latest models is now full blown,” Graciano Yumul, supervising undersecretary of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said.
Yumul said the recurring system is likely to bring heavy rains until February next year.
La Niña brought torrential rains that caused severe flooding in 25 provinces in the Philippines from December 2010 to March 2011.
Officials of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the flooding and mudslides during that period killed at least 42 people, with eight injured and five people missing.
The massive flooding also affected over 1.3 million people from 144 towns in the eastern provinces.
Yumul said the torrential rains were a combined effect of the northeast monsoon and the tail end of a cold front that started on Dec. 29, 2010 caused by La Niña.
He said a new tropical cyclone is likely to bring more rains over some parts of the country this week.

Filipino Killed in Dubai Road Accident
Two men died and a third was injured when their pick-up crashed into a tanker on Sunday morning.
Dubai Police said the accident happened on Business Bay Bridge towards Deira at about 8.45am, which caused a massive traffic jam.
Chief Traffic Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP), told Gulf News that the Pakistani driver of the tanker has been provisionally detained for reckless driving and causing two deaths.
“The 23-year-old Pakistani man was driving a water tanker. Suddenly he veered into another lane and rammed into a pick-up carrying refreshments. An Egyptian driver, in his 30s, who was driving a pick-up, could not avoid the water tanker due to the sudden swerving. Two passengers in the pick-up, a Filipino and an Indian, died instantly. The Egyptian who sustained minor injuries was taken to hospital for treatment,” said Bu Farousha.
The Pakistani driver is currently detained and will be questioned by traffic prosecutors today, according to TPP’s Head.

Report on Kuwait OFW Deployment Ban Denied
Philippines’ Ambassador to Kuwait has denied a report that Manila is officially banning Filipino domestic workers from deployment in the country.
“The last update I received from the team that visited Kuwait last week was that the committee in the House of Representatives will review the Migrant Workers Act,” Shulan Primavera told Kuwait Times. “So far, we have not received any official statement or information from Manila, and all of my sources are denying that an official announcement has been issued,” he said.
Several sources have reported that Manila had officially announced that it was suspending the process of sending domestic workers to Kuwait indefinitely until new legislation is introduced to protect them.
The head of the Domestic Workers’ Union in the Philippines had previously said that what she had seen during her recent visit to Kuwait helped explain why Manila has been contemplating the introduction of such a decision for some time.

Three Pinoy Indies, Brillante Mendoza Honored at Int’l Film Festivals
Marlon Rivera’s “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” and Alvin Yapan’s “Gayuma” will be vying for awards at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival (BIFF) and the 27th Warsaw Film Festival (WFF), respectively.
Bombo Radyo reported on Oct. 4 that “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” is nominated for BIFF’s Cinema Fairbindet Award and the Best First Feature Award. According to the film festival’s official website, the Cinema Fairbindet Award is given to either feature or documentary films “that addresses a global issue and encourages discussion in an extraordinary way – whether climate change, migration, education or human rights violations.”
The BIFF will be held in Berlin, Germany from Feb. 9 to 19, 2012.
“Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” also snagged a nomination at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) for the Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema, which is currently running until Oct. 14. The VIFF website states that the award is given to “a new director from Pacific Asia… to a creative and innovative film, made early in the director’s career, which has not yet won significant international recognition.”

MARQUEZ WILL PAY FOR DISRESPECT - ROACH
Celebrated boxing trainer Freddie Roach predicted the other day Manny Pacquiao will stop Juan Manuel Marquez inside six rounds in their WBO welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Nov. 12 and said the spark in the Filipino icon’s eye in training camp indicates he’s going all out for a decisive victory in their third encounter.
While Marquez has been uncharacteristically polite to Pacquiao during the recent world media tour, Roach said he’ll never forget the Mexican’s whining after the draw in 2004 and losing by split decision in 2008.
Marquez even flew to Manila in 2009 with an entourage to taunt Pacquiao and goad him into agreeing to another face-off. Marquez caused a mild commotion at the Araneta Coliseum ringside when he gate-crashed a boxing card to confront Pacquiao.
Last November, Marquez showed up at a press conference in Las Vegas after defeating Michael Katsidis wearing a T-shirt with the words, in capital letters, emblazoned on the front – “MARQUEZ BEAT PACQUIAO TWICE.”

POLICE READY RAPS VS REBELS AFTER RELEASE OF MAYOR DANO, ESCORTS
Shortly after communist rebels on Sunday released Lingig, Surigao del Sur Mayor Henry Dano and his two Army escorts, police said they are now readying charges against their captors.
Philippine National Police spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said Dano and his escorts, Corporal Alrey Desamparado and Private First Class Rolan Saban, were released at the hinterlands of Trento town, Agusan del Sur, particularly at Upper New Visayas, Barangay Pulanglupa.
The three were released before Governor Johnny Pimentel and other religious groups. Dano was brought to Davao City for a medical check-up while his escorts were brought to the military headquarters in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
"We are preparing the document for filing of appropriate charges in court," Cruz said.
The release was also confirmed by Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo who said that the mayor and the soldiers had been freed around 3 p.m. He said the release of Mayor Dano and his escorts would fuel hopes in the peace negotiations.

GMA’S P1.28B YOUTH PROGRAM TAINTED WITH IRREGULARITIES – COA
FORMER President Gloria Arroyo’s program to hire out-of-school-youth may have had a noble intention but its implementation was riddled with irregularities that even the Commission on Audit (COA) cannot say if the beneficiaries received the salary promised them.
In fact, the Audit commission doubted if the street sweepers employed under the Out-of-School Youth Serving Towards Economic Recovery (Oyster) program that had a funding of P1.28 billion were justly paid because the project lacked “structured monitoring mechanism” from the two agencies ordered to implement it—the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Philippine National Police (PNP.)
For six years, the Department of Budget and Management released an aggregate of P1.28 billion to the DPWH’s Central Office, which was forwarded to its own National Capital Region (NCR) Office. In turn, the funds were “transferred to and fully expended” to the PNP.
The commission reported that as of June 30, 2010, the DPWH transferred P471.24 million to the PNP Headquarters Office and P811.041 million to the PNP National Capital Region Police Office since November 2005.
For January to June 2010, P154.308 million should have been used to pay the salaries of the workers, COA said.
However, the commission said there was no way of knowing if those enrolled in the program were properly compensated since there was no report from the PNP.

DON’T TOUCH PALACE ‘PORK’
THE House Committee on Appropriations yesterday rejected the inclusion of the Executive department’s P18.3-billion budget for unfilled positions in the special provision that would restore the P4.971-billion fund for the unfilled positions in the judiciary, Congress and other constitutional offices.
Administration critics have expressed concern Malacañang would use the P18.3 billion as its own pork barrel and realign the allocation for purposes other than filling vacant positions in the Executive department.
Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya Jr., chairman of the panel, batted for the status quo on the Executive branch’s fund two days before the House of Representatives was to vote on the 2012 P1.816-trillion General Appropriations Bill (GAB) on third and final reading either tomorrow or Wednesday. Congress goes on Halloween recess this week.
Abaya, head of the small committee finalizing the version of next year’s national budget, stressed there is no need to include the Executive department’s budget for unfilled positions in the P101-billion Miscellaneous Personnel Benefit Funds (MPBF) because Malacañang through the Department of Budget and Management has been strictly exercising transparency.

YUMUL ON FLOOD SUIT: 'BLAME RAIN, NOT US'
“Blame it on the rain, not us.” This was the terse reply of Department of Science and Technology (DoST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul when asked yesterday to react on the class suit reportedly being prepared by officials of flood-tormented Bulacan against agencies deemed responsible for releasing water from dams during recent typhoons.
Yumul, also the supervising official of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), insisted that massive flooding in Bulacan was a result of heavy rainfall and not the release of excess water from Angat dam.
His view was supported by Roy Badilla, Weather Services Assistant Chief of the PAGASA’s Hydrometeorological Division.
“Floods in these areas (in Bulacan) were not due to the discharge of water from Angat and Ipo dams but due to the huge volume of rain that affected the area,” Badilla said.
Likewise, Yumul cited soil saturation as one of the causes of the flooding in Bulacan.
“I still need to see and understand the details (of the class suit). If other data are available, we will be interested to see them,” he said.
“We in PAGASA work on whatever data we have,” Yumul added, pertaining to the PAGASA rainfall data gathered by Badilla’s division.

TWIN BLASTS ROCK ZAMBO; 9 HURT
Two separate explosions rocked Zamboanga City Sunday, causing extensive damage to a hotel and a cockpit arena and wounding nine people, including three boxers. Chief Superintendent Elpidio de Asis, Zamboanga Peninsula Regional
Police Office director, said the first explosion occurred at 12:25 p.m. inside a cockpit arena in Barangay San Roque, where five persons were wounded.
“We are thankful that it happened two hours earlier than the expected convergence of people here, the cockfighting regularly starts here at 2 p.m.,” De Asis said.
“The improvised explosive device was placed near the bleacher, so we could not imagine the damage and casualties it might cause if the explosion occurred when this area is packed with people,” he added.
De Asis said the explosion shattered the glass panels separating a portion where cockfighting occurs and the portion of the wooden bleachers.
He claimed the damage was minimal if compared with the destruction caused by the blast at Red Palm Pension House in Barangay Guiwan, also in Zamboanga City that happened five minutes later.

CAVITE-ANTIPOLO LRT EXTENSION SISIMULAN NA
Magandang balita para sa milyon-milyong residente ng Cavite at Antipolo dahil pasisimulan na ng pamunuan ng Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) ang naudlot na proyekto na aabot hanggang sa lalawigan ng Cavite at Antipolo City ang biyahe ng Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 at LRT line 2.

Sinabi ni Roxas, kasado na ang plano sa proyekto, kung saan ang dating rota ng LRT 1 mula sa Roosevelt, Quezon City hanggang sa Baclaran, Parañaque ay daragdagan pa ng walo pang istasyon na aabot hanggang sa Bacoor Cavite.
Habang ang LRT Line 2 mula sa Recto Avenue sa Maynila hanggang sa Santolan, Pasig City ay paaabutin sa Masinag, Antipolo City.

NO EXTRA FUNDS; PALACE CAN COVER P13.8 B FOR TYPHOON REHAB
Malacañang is not inclined to seek a supplemental budget from Congress to bankroll the increasing cost of rehabilitation of typhoon-hit provinces which now stands at P13.8 billion.
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Sunday the government has sufficient funds as of now to address the multi-billion-peso damage to agriculture and infrastructure left by the typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel.”
“As stated by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, there is enough fiscal space in our budget to handle the calamity,” Lacierda said over staterun Radyo ng Bayan, when asked if the Palace will consider seeking additional budget from Congress. Asked if the Palace will seek international aid for people adversely affected by the recent floods, Lacierda said: “Let us wait and see. Gazmin had earlier recommended to President Aquino the declaration of calamity in areas affected by the massive devastation wrought by the back-to-back typhoons, correcting earlier reports that the Defense Chief had called for a national state of calamity.
The proposal is still being studied by the President.
Damage to agriculture and infrastructure has reached P13.8 billion, higher than that left by tropical storm “Ondoy” in 2009.

GARCIA CRIES FOUL, DEMANDS REMATCH
The camp of Ramon Garcia Hirales is demanding a rematch after the Mexican claimed he was robbed of a victory against Donnie "Ahas" Nietes in Pinoy Pride 9 Saturday in Bacolod City.
Nietes defeated Garcia via unanimous decision to win his second world title, with judges scoring the bout 115-113, 118-110 and 117-111. Garcia felt he became the victim of "home-cooking."

"It's not fair, it's really not fair. The people know and the press know, he doesn't fight," said Alex Montenegro, Garcia's manager.
Garcia's trainer, Leo Camacho, complained about the scores of the American judges, who had scored the bout 118-110 and 117-111.
The Filipino judge, Atty. Danrex Tapdasan, scored the bout 115-113. After the event, boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielz said Tapdasan's scorecard best reflected the closeness of the boxing match.
Nietes defended his victory, however, saying he knew he was ahead on the judges' scorecards.

'KA ROGER' IS DEAD, REDS ADMIT FINALLY
More than 3 months since he succumbed to a heart attack, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) finally admitted that its spokesman, Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal, is dead. In a statement, CPP said Rosal died last June 22 because of a heart attack. He was 64.
“The public announcement was delayed to allow the concerned organs of the CPP to inform Ka Roger's daughters of their father's demise. Intense military operations prevented information from reaching his daughters with dispatch. Ka Roger's siblings have also been informed of his passing.”
“The entire membership of the CPP, Red fighters of the New People's Army (NPA), revolutionary forces and the Filipino masses mourn Ka Roger's death,” the statement read.
All units of the CPP’s armed group, the New People’s Army, will fall in formation to pay tribute to Ka Roger on October 15 at exactly 12 noon.
“They will carry out a gun salute in his memory. All units of the CPP and revolutionary mass organizations are enjoined to launch tribute meetings to remember Ka Roger and his contributions to the historic revolutionary struggles of the Filipino people,” CPP said.
The news of Rosal’s death has been circulating since last year because of his absence in peace talks.
Rosal headed the NPA's Melito Glor Command in the Southern Tagalog region and was later designated as spokesman of the CPP.

Former Beatle McCartney set to wed U.S. heiress: reports
LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney will wed for the third time on Sunday when he and New York heiress Nancy Shevell are married in a civil ceremony in London, British newspapers reported.
The Daily Mirror and the Sun tabloids said on Saturday that McCartney and Shevell, who posted wedding banns last month, would be married at London’s Marylebone Register Office before 30 invited guests.
It is the same venue where McCartney married his late first wife Linda in 1969, at the height of the Beatles’ fame. Linda died of breast cancer in 1998.
"They have been given special dispensation by the council to marry on Sunday and have chosen what would have been the groom’s former bandmate John Lennon’s 71st birthday for their big day," the Daily Mirror said.
McCartney’s partnership with Lennon in 1960s Britain produced some of the most famous and enduring pop songs of the past 50 years.
A spokesman for McCartney told Reuters in an email: "We are not commenting. It’s all speculation."
The Daily Mirror quoted a source close to McCartney as saying: "The wedding is in keeping with the way Paul and Nancy have conducted their entire relationship — low-key, understated and fuelled by goodwill.
"Neither of them want a huge fuss made and the main priority for both was family."
The wedding will be followed by a reception held in McCartney’s back garden, the paper said.
Shevell, 51, who is divorced, and McCartney, 69, are believed to have begun dating after his bitter split with second wife, former model Heather Mills.
McCartney and Mills were wed in 2002 in a lavish ceremony at Castle Leslie in Ireland estimated by celebrity magazines to have cost around $3.2 million.
But four years later they confirmed they had separated, blaming media intrusion into their private lives, and in 2008 the couple divorced.
McCartney has a son, two daughters and a stepdaughter from his marriage to Linda and a daughter from his union with Mills.

Fortune 500 Firm Fluor Corporation Opens Cebu Office, to Hire More Engineers
Fortune 500 company, Fluor Corp., a US-based construction and management firm, which opened an office in Cebu recently, is targeting to hire some 150 engineering graduates by the end of this year, as it hopes to grow its pool of employees to 300 by 2012.
“We will be aggressive in our presence in Cebu, as we have successfully done in Manila,” said Peter Oosterveer, group president of Fluor’s Energy and Chemicals Group. “:n the next few months, we will be hiring more engineers.”
The company launched its engineering and design facility in Cebu at the TGU Tower, at the Asiatown IT Park. Said facility is the second office opened by the firm in the Philippines – their Alabang quarters currently employs a sizeable workforce–and its fourth in Southeast Asia.
Oosterveer said that because Fluor is a knowledge-based outsourcing firm, it will need the expertise of local engineering graduates from industrial, chemical, and mechanical to do “highly complicated technical work” from engineering design, procurement, and construction management services, among others.
He expressed optimism that the company would be able to find a ready pool of engineers in Cebu, saing that Fluor’s reason for choosing the Philippines as one of its growth areas in Asia is due largely to the country’s good relationship with US-based companies, as well as the Filipino work ethic, flexibility and quality of skill.
“The company’s strong presence for about 25 years in the Philippines is enough testament of our confidence in the country,” Oosterveer said.

Ten Filipino Seafarers Home After Pirate Abduction
Ten Filipino seafarers abducted by pirates in the Gulf of Oman were reunited with their families in the Philippines Saturday after spending more than six months in captivity.
The Filipinos were welcomed by their families at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Saturday, Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said. They were part of the 19 Philippine nationals who comprised the crew of the Panamanian-flagged, Greek-owned MV Dover.
Aside from the Filipinos also released were three Romanians and a Russian who served in the ship.
The remaining Filipino crew of the MV Dover are expected to arrive in the Philippines in the coming days.
Radio reports said that the MV Dover, a bulk carrier, was boarded by pirates last February 28 as it was travelling in the Gulf of Oman, 260 nautical miles North East of Salalah in the North Arabian Sea.
The pirates had commandeered the vessel and took it to Somalia where the captors demanded ransom for the release of the ship and its crewmen.

10 Victims of Illegal Recruitment Per Day, Says Migrante ME
At Migrante-Middle East’s (M-ME) complaint desk, an average of 10 cases of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) victimized by illegal recruiters come in on a daily basis.
This was among the cold figures provided by M-ME as the Saudi-based group of Filipino migrants frowned at the Philippine government’s “poor performance” in combating illegal recruitment activities the past few years.
M-ME Regional Coordinator John Leonard Monterona, citing data from his monitoring group in the Middle East, said they’re receiving an average of 10 victims of illegal recruitment who are asking for assistance.
In 2010, Monterona noted, the government handled 1,648 cases of illegal recruitment but it only acted upon and resolved 283, a disposition rate of 17.2 percent. He said the figures were from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

LARRY MARTIN NAMED FIRST PINOY 'BIGGEST LOSER'
After spending 125 days in the Biggest Loser camp, Larry Martin was declared on Saturday as the very first Pinoy Biggest Loser.
Martin lost the highest weight percentage of 39.61% since ABS-CBN's "The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition" aired its first episode on May 30. He entered the Biggest Loser camp weighing 255 pounds. He lost 101 pounds at the camp.
He now weighs 154 pounds.
Martin took home P1 million, a condominium unit from DCMI Homes, a Vespa scooter, a 40-inch Sony Bravia Internet TV, Whirlpool appliances, P100,000 worth of salon services, and a lifetime gym membership from Fitness First.
Martin will also appear on the cover of the November issue of Men's Health magazine.
Martin was a police officer in Camarines Sur, but was relieved from his post for failing to meet the 34-inch waistline limit.
Second place went to Art Mendoza, who lost 129 pounds or a weight percentage of 37.83%.
Mendoza received P500,000, a Vespa scooter, Whirlpool appliances, P50,000 worth of salon services, and a 1-year Fitness First membership.

PALACE ACCEPTS US ENVOY'S APOLOGY
Malacañang said today that the Philippine government will no longer ask US ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas to explain his remark that 40 percent of foreign men visit the country for sex.
"We were informed that the ambassador issued already, through text, an apology. So we consider that this is a close case," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda announced over state-run radio, Radyo ng Bayan.
Asked if Malacañang would push through with its plan to ask for an explanation from Thomas, Lacierda said that the apology, even though it was sent through text only to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, would be enough as it is already an admission that the US ambassador cannot back up his claim with statistics.
"The statement of Ambassador Thomas clearly shows that he was not able to back up [his claim] with statistics. Hence, he apologized to Secretary Del Rosario and to our government," the official said.

NIETES EKES OUT UNANIMOUS DECISION TO WIN LIGHT FLYWEIGHT CROWN
Filipino Donnie Nietes scored a hard-earned unanimous decision over game and gutsy Mexican Ramon Garcia late Saturday night to capture the WBO light flyweight crown at the St. La Salle Coliseum. Nietes won by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113. This writer scored the bout a draw.
Nietes took command early with his precision-punching but he suddenly went cold beginning in the sixth stanza, giving Garcia the courage to get back at him with ferocity.
Garcia even had the chance to put away Nietes several times but just couldn’t although at the end of the fight, he had the look of a winner since Nietes appeared as though he would pass out from exhaustion.
Garcia’s camp said their fighter was robbed and as they were walking back to their dressing room, they were screaming for a rematch.

FLOODS IN CENTRAL LUZON COULD LAST A MONTH
Massive flooding in Central Luzon brought about by back-to-back typhoons could last for a month even as the storms’ death toll reached 95, the civil defense chief said on Saturday.

Pedring slammed into the northern part of the Philippines on September 27, followed by Quiel just five days later, bringing storm surges, flash floods and landslides.
The combined death toll from the two storms rose to 95 with another 34 still listed as missing, many of them washed away by floodwaters or killed during the typhoons by strong winds toppling walls and trees.
Although the storms have passed, a low pressure area has been hovering over the country, causing rain to fall on areas already inundated by the two typhoons, the government weather station said.
The head of the disaster council’s reporting division, Emilia Tadeo said that relief goods were being rushed to the coastal areas despite the obstacles created by the floods.
“They are completely cut off, accessible by small boats and large trucks,” she told AFP.
Damage estimates from the two storms was estimated at about P14 billion ($322 million) but Tadeo said the figure was certain to rise as local officials got a more complete picture of the devastation in their areas.
“Every day, our damage figures go up. We are still awaiting damage assessment reports from other regions,” she said.
