Marina Official Hails 1.5m Filipino Seafarers Contribution to PH Economy
The head of the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) in Eastern Visayas hailed the big contribution of the Filipino seafarers in keeping afloat the economic status of the country.
Atty. Manuel C. Portus, director of Marina in Eastern Visayas made the positive remark in the media interaction dubbed “Harampang ha PIA” held on September 21 at the regional office of the Philippine Information Agency facilitated by PIA regional director Erlinda Oliva P. Tiu.
“We have to place the Filipino seafarers as the center of the celebration” Portus emphasized as he relayed the information that June 25 this year is also celebrated as World Seafarers Day.
The top Marina official stressed that the bulk of the world’s seafarers came from the Philippines. “It is appropriate that they will be given importance and be at the center of the celebration” he added.
He also informed that Philippine government take cognizance of their contribution to the economy which in return government has provided the Filipino seafarers with corresponding services for their further development and protection.
The Philippine government through its agencies providing maritime services such as Marina, NMP, Philippine Ports Authority, Philippine Coast Guard and other agencies has implemented various programs, projects and activities geared towards improving the capabilities and enhancing the knowledge of Filipino seafarers, Portus further said.
It was learned from Atty. Josephus Jimenez, executive director, National Maritime Polytechnic, who is one of the guests in the media interaction that the Filipino seafarers contributed US$ 2.5 billion a year to the Philippine economy. He added that 35% of the world’s 1.5 million seafarers are Filipinos.
